I also can't believe that I will have two in school...pre-k and 2nd grade. So..this weekend we are finishing up buying school supplies and school clothes. I have always loved this time of year. I can remember going to buy my school supplies at the local TG&Y and being super excited. So...since I am in the mind set of "Back To School"...it is only appropriate that I give you some fun ideas for study spaces for your kiddos. This week I will be dedicating all my blogs to Back To School! </span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial;">Check out this fabulous article by</span><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><span class="block byLine"> <span class="author">Tabitha Sukhai</span>, This Old House online. </span></span><br />
<br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: large;"><strong>Bring Home the Good Grades</strong></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">A top-notch education starts at home, and a dedicated homework area could help your kids complete their assignments efficiently and successfully—with the least amount of kicking and screaming. Whatever your space or budget limitations may be, any devoted space for study is better than sprawling out on the floor in front of the television. Not convinced? Build it—whether it's a nook in the kitchen or a room all its own—and the good grades will come. Here are a few pointers to keep in mind as you get started.</span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Consider your kid's age and learning style when deciding where to site a study space. The U.S. Department of Education recommends a quiet, well-lighted place that’s fully stocked with the necessary materials and supplies for your child's grade level. Younger kids who need homework help and supervision, for example, might benefit from working in the kitchen, where rolling out a supply cart can indicate the start of study time, and you can do quiet chores or prepare dinner while they work.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br />
</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><strong>Keep It All Quiet on the Homework Front</strong></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Older kids might do well with a bit of privacy and isolation, so carve out space in their bedroom or the dining room, where you can hide the work area with a room divider if necessary. Above all, make sure you respect your kid's academic efforts by mandating household quiet time while schoolwork is being completed, especially if he or she is working in a common area. You may be winding down after a long day’s work, but it'd be hard for anyone to concentrate while overhearing half of a lively telephone conversation or the latest episode of Wheel of Fortune.</span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><strong>Do Homework in Timed Heats</strong></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">A consistent study routine with about 30 minutes of downtime before getting started is widely recommended. "Use a power period of 45 minutes of work and 5 minutes of break time to promote productivity and efficiency. Create a workflow process with your kids and it will make all the difference," advises Ellen Delap of Professional-Organizer.com.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Elizabeth Hagen, author of Organize with Confidence (and mom of five!), suggests supplying kids with a timer so they can learn to focus on their homework for an allotted period, and work toward finishing so that they can watch their favorite TV show or go play. </span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><strong>Lay Out a Power Desk</strong></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">A spacious, flat surface (desk or table) and a comfortable chair that suits your child's height will encourage neat handwriting. For desks, opt for a lamp with a built-in holder for pencils, scissors, and other supplies. A small bookcase or wall-mounted shelves preloaded with an atlas, dictionary, and thesaurus wouldn't hurt, either. </span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br />
</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">If you have the wall space, hang a corkboard or inconspicuous magnet strips for posting those A+ exams and a calendar for keeping track of assignments, school events, and extracurricular activities. Mimicking this school feature is a fun way to put kids into student mode at home.</span><br />

Well....let me just tell ya.....YOU NEED TO CLEAN YOUR HOUSE from top to bottom.....I mean DEEP CLEAN it! I'm really not the one to be preaching this to you right now since at the moment my house is super messy with dust balls galore creeping around everywhere. :) </span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">But...right now sellers have alot of competition.A seller should make DEEP CLEANING a top priority when getting their house ready to sell. I found this great article by Jane Hoback about how to make your house sparkle with a little bit of elbow grease. Check it out..and get to cleaning. Oh..and then..can you stop by my house too..cleaning house is not my favorite. ;)</span><br />

<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: large;"><strong>Cleaning House: Secrets of a Truly Deep Clean</strong></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">By: Jane Hoback </span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br />

<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br />
</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Deep clean your house and you’ll brighten rooms and help maintain your home’s value. .</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br />
</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Deep cleaning your house is that top-to-bottom, take-no-dust-bunny-prisoners, mother-in-law-quality cleaning that truly maintains the value of your home. Here are frequently overlooked areas that a little spit and polish wouldn’t hurt.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br />
</span><br />
<strong><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">De-bug the light fixtures</span></strong><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">See that bug burial ground within your overhead fixtures? Turn off the lights and carefully remove fixture covers, dump out flies and wash with hot soapy water. While you’re up there, dust bulbs. Dry everything thoroughly before replacing the cover.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br />
</span><br />
<strong><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Vacuum heat vents and registers</span></strong><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Dirt and dust build up in heat vents and along register blades. Vents also are great receptacles for coins and missing buttons. Unscrew vent covers from walls or pluck them from floors, remove foreign objects, and vacuum inside the vent. Clean grates with a damp cloth and screw back tightly.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br />
</span><br />
<strong><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Polish hardware</span></strong><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">To deep clean brass door hinges, handles, and cabinet knobs, thoroughly wipe with a damp microfiber cloth, then polish with Wright’s or Weiman brass cleaner ($4). Dish soap shines up glass or stainless steel knobs. Use a Q-tip to detail the ornamental filigree on knobs and handles.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br />
</span><br />
<strong><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Replace grungy switch plates</span></strong><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Any amateur can wipe a few fingerprints off cover plates that hide light switches, electric outlets, phone jacks, and cable outlets. But only deep cleaners happily remove plates to vacuum and swipe the gunk behind. (OK, we’re a little OCD when it comes to dirt!) Make sure cover plates are straight when you replace them. And pitch plates that are beyond the help of even deep cleaning. New ones cost less than $2 each.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br />
</span><br />
<strong><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Neaten weather stripping</span></strong><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Peeling, drooping weather stripping on doors and windows makes rooms look old. If the strip still has some life, nail or glue it back. If it’s hopeless, cut out and replace sections, or just pull the whole thing off and start new. A 10-ft. roll of foam weather stripping costs $8; 16-ft. vinyl costs about $15.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br />
</span><br />
<strong><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Replace stove drip pans</span></strong><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Some drip pans are beyond the scrub brush. Replacing them costs about $3 each and instantly freshens your stove. </span><br />

An attic bedroom remodel is a good way to add space without adding on, which would be a much bigger investment of time and money.</span><br />
<h3><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: small;">Attic bedroom investment</span></h3><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Attics are penny-wise candidates for remodeling projects because the basic structure—a roof and floor—already exist. Although the pitch of the roof usually dictates sloping interior walls and restricted headroom, people often find these quirky characteristics charming and desirable.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">According to Remodeling Magazine’s annual </span><a class="external" href="http://www.remodeling.hw.net/2010/costvsvalue/national.aspx" rel="nofollow" target="_blank"><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Cost vs. Value Report</span></a><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">, a midrange attic bedroom remodel costs $51,400 and returns more than 72% of the investment, based on national averages. That’s down nearly 11% since 2009.</span><br />
<h3><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Attic bedroom requirements</span></h3><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">An attic bedroom has special requirements:</span><br />

</ul><ul><li><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Dormer windows for air, daylight, and emergency egress. </span></li>

<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">The return on your investment in an attic remodel varies by region. In the Pacific region of the country, the return on investment is almost 80%. In the central Midwestern states, such as Iowa and Kansas, the return on an attic remodel is 63%.<br />

In fact..I wish I could have an old barn that was just mine. I would make it a mommy cave. I would have a little craft area...yoga station....reading area...and maybe even an old horse to keep me company. But..for now....I think the closest thing to a barn for me is a sliding barn door. Aren't these doors great? </span><br />

Honestly, we are still working on putting it back up. We have secured the fence posts with cement..but we still need to put up the panels. When there is damage to a fence that you share with a neighbor...this can be a challenging issue. Who pays for it? Here is another great article by Ann Cochran that provides great advice on handling this issue. </span><br />
</div></div></div><div class="content"><div class="article"><div class="related-info"><div class="photo-gallery photo-gallery-lg"><table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>

<br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">If you install a fence, it's your responsibility to make sure both sides are well-maintained. Avoid fence disputes by practicing fence etiquette—a good neighbor policy. If you follow zoning regulations and share basics with neighbors before construction, you can </span><a class="internal" href="http://www.blogger.com/articles/fencing-guide-options/"><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">install a new fence</span></a><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"> AND stay on good terms with the folks next door.</span></div></div><h3><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Must-dos</span></h3><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><strong>Observe boundaries:</strong> Don’t risk having to tear down that fence by going even one inch over your property line. Study your </span><a class="internal" href="http://www.blogger.com/articles/property-lines-101-speak-same-language-during-dispute/"><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">house line drawing or plat</span></a><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"> or order a new survey ($500 to $1,000) from a land surveyor to be sure of boundaries. Fence companies usually install a foot inside the line, to be on the safe side.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br />
</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><strong>Respect limits:</strong> Fencing companies obtain permits and must know local zoning regulations for height, setbacks, and other restrictions. Height limits typically are 6 feet for side and back yards; 4 feet for front yards. More restrictive rules often apply to corner lots, where blind curves can limit driving visibility. To avoid disputes, review restrictions with your fence company before choosing a fence.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br />
</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><strong>Follow HOA rules:</strong> Fencing companies are not responsible for knowing home owners association dos and don’ts; that’s your job. Unless you want to suffer committee wrath, and engage in a dispute, </span><a class="internal" href="http://www.blogger.com/articles/hoas-what-you-need-to-know-about-rules/"><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">follow HOA guidelines</span></a><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">. HOAs can dictate style, height, and maintenance. If your HOA wants all structures to match, you won’t have much wiggle room.</span><br />
<h3><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Nice-to-dos</span></h3><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><strong>Share your plans:</strong> No one likes surprises. Before installing, save yourself a fence dispute and have a conversation with neighbors. If </span><a class="internal" href="http://www.blogger.com/articles/property-line-disputes-peaceful-ways-settle-boundary-issues/"><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">property line issues</span></a><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"> exist, resolve them before installation. No need to show neighbors the design—that’s just inviting trouble. They have to live with your choice unless it lowers property values or is dangerous.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br />
</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><strong>Put the best face outward:</strong> It’s common practice to put the more finished side of your fence facing the street and your neighbor’s yard. </span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br />
</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><strong>Maintain and improve:</strong> It’s your responsibility to clean and maintain both sides. If an aging section starts to lean, shore it or replace it.</span><br />
<h3><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Good-to-knows</span></h3><ul><li><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">The term “fence” includes </span><a class="internal" href="http://www.blogger.com/articles/add-living-privacy-screen-your-small-home/"><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">trees or hedges that create barriers</span></a><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">. </span></li>
</ul><ul><li><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">If you have a valid reason for wanting an extra high structure, to block a nasty view or noisy street, apply to your zoning board for a variance. Neighbors can comment on your request during the variance hearing.</span></li>
</ul><ul><li><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">If your neighbors are damaging your fence, take photos and try to work it out with them first. If they don’t agree to repair it, take your fence dispute to small claims court. Award limits vary by state: $1,500 in Kentucky to $15,000 in Tennessee.</span></li>

The letter should include:</span><br />

</ul><h3><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: small;">Trim their trees</span></h3><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">If the limbs of a tree hang over your property line, you may </span><a class="external" href="http://www.na.fs.fed.us/spfo/pubs/howtos/ht_prune/prun001.htm" target="_blank"><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">trim the branches</span></a><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"> up to the property line, but not cut down the entire tree. If a tree dies after your little pruning, the neighbor can pursue a claim against you in civil or small claims court. Depending on the laws of your state, your neighbor may have to prove the damage was deliberate or caused by negligence, but may also be able to recover up to three times the value of the tree. <br />
<br />
Before you cut, tell your neighbors what you intend to do to protect your property. They may offer to trim the whole tree instead of risking your half-oaked job.</span><br />
<h3><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: small;">Your tree falls</span></h3><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">It’s always a good idea to take care of your </span><a class="internal" href="http://www.blogger.com/articles/plant-trees-save-energy-grow-value/"><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">big and beautiful trees</span></a><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">, and keep receipts for trimmings and other care. <br />
<br />
But if your tree falls over a neighbor’s property line, do nothing until their insurance company contacts you. You may not be liable unless you knew or should have known the tree was in a dangerous condition. If you pruned a tree or shored up trunks to prevent problems, gather your receipts to prove your diligence. </span><em><br />

<br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">I hope you have been having a super amazing week. We have been pretty busy at the Landreth house....lots of end of school activities....mixed in with lots of trips to Eskimo Sno...we absolutely are addicted to those yummy sno cones! And.....a ton of new clients looking for homes. I love this time of year because I get to check out all the new homes that are on the market...and there are some cuties out there! </span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">So....right now at my house we are trying to decide on an area rug for the family room. Why is it so freaking difficult to choose an area rug? Should I go neutral..or gold bold with a funky fun rug? This is totally stressing me out at the moment. I have been checking out rugs on line and still have not found the perfect one. Have you ever checked out this website </span><a href="http://www.westelm.com/"><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">www.westelm.com</span></a><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">. They have super adorable things for the home. I have been eyeing a few rugs on there. </span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">So..check out these photos of some area rugs I found on some other sites......enjoy! Oh....I will let you know what we decide on too!</span><br />

You have probably been wondering where I have been? So sorry I have not posted anything this week. I have been working quite a bit....and have just been being a mommy and wife to the boys and to my Super Tall Mr. Fix-It Accountant Husband. I have not had a lot of time to sit down at my computer. But..today....I have 45 minutes until I meet my next client. We will be looking at homes on the West side of Norman under $150K......let me know if you know of anything that is not on the market yet. </span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br />
</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">So...I think my boys have 21 more days of school left. Which means that it is almost time for barefeet...lemonade stands....playing in the sandbox...running through the sprinkler and spending a ton of time on our back porch. We recently had a pergola built over our back porch....and I am super excited about spending my free time hanging out watching the boys play. </span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br />
</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">So..in celebration that there are only 21 days left of school...I am giving you some fun photos of porches and patios to view. They are just fabulous. Enjoy...... </span><br />

<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">I have been using my weekend to organize my junk closet and really think about the meaning of Easter. I watched the movie...."Passion of Christ" last night . And.... Wow...this is an amazing movie. It really spoke directly to my heart. I would highly recommend it to everyone.....children and adults. So..I will be playing this weekend and will be checking in next week. Enjoy your family! </span>NormanHouseLovehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14698497346794606634noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2283369314806987370.post-19479321282149602512011-04-19T13:04:00.001-05:002011-04-19T16:05:37.970-05:00Ideas for Hanging your Photos!I love photos...professional and just the snapshots that I take at home. In fact...my family likes to call me the paparazzi. There are so many memories of my children that I just don't want to forget. The challenge is printing all the photos that I have taken and hanging the professional photos on the wall. I have a ton in my junk closet that I need to hang up and a ton of photos that I have taken that I want to have enlarged and printed. <br />
<br />
I was browsing the internet and found these great ideas for all of my photos. What about you? Are sorting through your photos and displaying them on your wall a project on your to do list? I hope these pics give you some fun inspiration for your HouseLove.<br />

Fridays just make me feel happy. Even though I work a lot on the weekends....I still feel the happiness around me.</span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">So...yesterday....the weather was all springy and warm....and today..well....it kinda feels like Fall! So..I am bringing out my favorite fall soup today. It is sooooooo yummy and super healthy. I have to admit that my Super Tall Mr. Fix-It Husband and boys will not eat it...which means I get to eat the entire batch. </span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br />
</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">I first made this soup for a baby shower about 5 or so years ago when one of my very best life-long friends Sara had her son, Josh. And.....it was a hit. I found it on the Martha Stewart website. So...here is the super duper yummolicious recipe! I hope you enjoy it as much as I do.</span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><span style="color: #bf9000; font-size: large;"><strong>Butternut Apple Soup</strong></span></span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Ingredients</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">1 tablespoon unsalted butter</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">1 medium onion, diced</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">1 butternut squash (about 2 pounds), peeled, seeded, and chopped</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">4 red or golden apples, peeled, cored, and chopped, plus 1 apple, finely diced and tossed in lemon juice, for garnish (optional)</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">2 teaspoons coarse salt</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">1 1/2 teaspoons ground cumin</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">1/2 teaspoon ground coriander</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">1/2 teaspoon ground ginger</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">1/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">1/4 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">2 cups homemade or store-bought low-sodium chicken or vegetable stock</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">2 1/2 cups water, plus more if needed</span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Directions</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">1.Melt butter in a large saucepan over medium heat. Add onion; cook, stirring occasionally, until it begins to soften, about 4 minutes. Add squash, and cook, stirring occasionally, until soft, about 10 minutes.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br />
</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">2.Add apples, salt, cumin, coriander, ginger, cayenne, black pepper, stock, and the water (just enough to cover). Bring to a boil. Reduce to a simmer, and cook until vegetables are very soft, about 30 minutes.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br />
</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">3.Puree in batches in a food processor or blender until smooth, and return to saucepan. Heat over low, thinning with more water if necessary. To serve, ladle into shallow bowls; garnish with diced apples, jalapeno slices, and sour cream if desired</span><br />
<br />
<span style="background-color: white; color: blue; font-family: Arial;"><em><strong>Hint: make sure that the ginger is completely cooked. If it is not well cooked..the soup will not taste as yummy. </strong></em></span><br />

I am...we are going to be pretty busy this weekend. I have a lot of property showings..."T" has a birthday party to go to...my husband is finalizing all the end of tax season stuff ......and.....WE ARE PLANTING FLOWERS! Woo...hoo..I love flowers. I don't think you could ever have too many flowers decorating your house. <br />
<br />
I bought 120 tulip bulbs from Home Depot about 5 months ago and had big plans to plant them in my front yard. But..are they blooming making my front yard super beautiful? That is a BIG FAT NO! They are sitting somwehere in my garage rotting. Don't you just love it when you do things like that? <br />
<br />
So..this weekend....we are planting flowers. My mom bought my Super Tall Mr. FIX-IT/Accountant Husband a ton of flowers for his birthday...so we are planning on planting them as a family. The kids love playing in the dirt and spending time with mommy and daddy together...especially daddy! ;)<br />
<br />
So...if you are kinda catching on to what I do in my free time....I am guessing you already know that I have found some great landscaping ideas for your HOUSELOVE! Check them out! Oh..and send me some photos of your flowers or garden! I would love to see them! <br />

Oh My!<div><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">I hope your Monday is going well! Today is a special day in our family! My Super Tall Mr. Fix-It Husband is turning 39 today! Woo..hoo! "T" helped me make his favorite meal for tonight...lasagna and french bread...and a vanilla cake with chocolate frosting! I have to say that I am feeling a little organized today. I'm not used to having dinner prepared before I get home from work! All I have to do is pop it in the oven. Gosh..wouldn't it be nice to a have a live-in Alice...you know...from the Brady Brunch? Hmm...do you know anyone that would like to cook and clean for me just for the fun of it? ;)</span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">On another note...here are a few houses with creative dining rooms! Oh sooo cute! </span><br />

I hope you are having a relaxing Saturday. The boys and I have been having a fun day. We slept in and took a walk to the park while my Super Tall Mr. Fix It/Accountant husband had to do a little work at the office. I am so happy that tax season is coming to an end. As my husband's business slows down....my business picks up. In fact...we had to do the switcharoo a few moments ago...as he finished working....he stopped by my office to pick up the boys so that I could have a few hours to work. I am so blessed to have a husband that loves to be with his kiddos. <br />
<br />
So..I have been thinking about some ideas for my kitchen. I don't want to do too much because I don't think we will be in our house too much longer..so I don't want to invest too much money. Check out these super amazing kitchens....I just sigh as I admire them....it just makes me happy looking at them. I LOVE LOVE LOVE all of them! Which one is your favorite?<br />

We are trying to find a solution that we both agree upon. We used to use one of our bedrooms for a home office...but we changed it to little "T's" room. But......I think I found a solution...hee..hee. I am a little giddy about it. </span></h1><h1><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: small;">My solution? Well...see the picture below? We have an area in one of our living areas that has built in shelves similar to the photo below...but it does not have a desk area. I am hoping my Super Tall Mr Fix-IT/Accountant husband will build this desk for me. </span></h1><h1><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: small;">So..say a little prayer that he will agree to work on this for me after tax season ends. He is a hard sell sometimes. I will keep you posted. </span></h1><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><strong>Oh....and check out this article below by <em>Terry Sheridan</em> about home office space.....it solved my issue...maybe it will help you as well. </strong></span></div></div><form action="/binder/" class="add-to-binder" id="add-to-binder-586" method="post" sizcache="20" sizset="2"><div class="added-to-binder"></div></form></div><div class="content" sizcache="33" sizset="116"><div class="article" sizcache="33" sizset="116"><div class="related-info"><div class="photo-gallery photo-gallery-lg"><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><img alt="Office area off kitchen work space" height="266" src="http://c0263062.cdn.cloudfiles.rackspacecloud.com/content/images/sized/small-home-office-mstudiogallery_e56ff35659abc3388369c79b57bc2d6b_3x2_jpg_300x200_q85.jpg" width="400" /> </span><br />
<strong><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: large;">Fit a Small Office in Your Home</span></strong><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Setting up a small office in your small home means finding new uses for closets and other tucked-away spaces. You can also get creative by making rooms do double</span> duty. </span></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">No matter where you choose to put your home office, make sure you have enough room for storage and, ideally, some natural light. Yes, you can! Squeeze a small </span><a class="internal" href="http://www.houselogic.com/articles/home-office-top-features/"><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">office</span></a><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"> into your small home, that is. But that doesn’t mean you have to take over one of the kids’ bedrooms—just look for under-utilized space.</span></div></div><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">After that, it’s decision time: How much to spend, how big to make the office, and how you’ll use it.<br />
<br />
Here are five solutions to consider:</span><br />
<div sizcache="33" sizset="117"><br />
</div><div sizcache="33" sizset="117"><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><strong>1. Kitchen helper.</strong> From a $400 </span><a class="external" href="http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/00116996" target="_blank"><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">store-bought island</span></a><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"> for bill-paying to a breakfast bench nook with file drawers built in under the seats (cost: $5,000 to $15,000), your kitchen is a treasure trove of small office possibilities. Even a slide-out cutting board (about $500 in a cabinet package) can serve as a nifty desktop.<br />
<br />
<strong>2. Closet conversion.</strong> Get rid of unused stuff or consolidate it in another area, and a 3- to 8-foot-wide closet accommodates a built-in desk, shelves, and lighting. Make a nearby chair do double duty for your desk.<br />
<br />
With doors and wiring for lighting and a phone, and possible added drywall, your new small office would cost $2,000 to $4,000. Keep in mind that the more floors and walls that wiring has to travel through, the costlier it gets.<br />
<br />
<strong>3. Porch possibilities.</strong> Convert that long, narrow space on the side of your small home that gets only seasonal use to a </span><a class="external" href="http://www.therenovationguru.com/enclosing-a-porch-or-breezeway/" target="_blank"><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">year-round office</span></a><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"> for about $15 per square foot. Use plug-in space heaters and fans for your HVAC system.<br />
<br />
Use </span><a class="external" href="http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/13690607" target="_blank"><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">inexpensive, freestanding shelves</span></a><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"> to provide storage space. Cost: About $70 for a 30-by-80-inch bookshelf.<br />
<br />
<strong>4. Those out-of-the-way spaces.</strong> Alcoves, lofts, stair landings, basement and garage corners, and bedroom nooks qualify as potential office space. Use freestanding shelving units and bookcases. Plants or privacy screens can “wall” the area without making it feel smaller.<br />
<br />
You can build a </span><a class="external" href="http://www.lowes.com/cd_Classic+span+classsearchtermStorageendecaterm+endecatermChestspan_1254940921" target="_blank"><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">bench for visitors</span></a><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"> with storage space inside for about $130. Want a craftsman to build it for you? Add another $300 to $400.<br />
<br />
<strong>5. Under-used dining rooms.</strong> Formal dining rooms can be overrated. If yours isn’t being used regularly, convert it to a small office. You’ll be close to your main entry, making it easy to receive clients and business associates. If a nearby kitchen or other busy household area is a noisy distraction, install French or sliding doors as acoustic barriers.</span><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"></span></div><div sizcache="33" sizset="117"><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Image: M. Studio Gallery, Cold Spring, NY/Sandy Viola "Wings of Love" photography</span></div></div></div>NormanHouseLovehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14698497346794606634noreply@blogger.com6tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2283369314806987370.post-68934921764161195562011-03-30T17:41:00.002-05:002011-03-31T16:30:16.542-05:00Guide to Paint Sheens: Ooooh, Shiny!<div style="background-color: transparent; border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none; color: black; overflow: hidden; text-align: left; text-decoration: none;"><div class="binder-item clearfix drag-to-binder"><div class="summary clearfix"><div class="description"><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">I recently read this article written by <em>Pat Curry</em>....and found it to be super helpful in choosing a paint sheen. <span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: large;">Guide to Paint Sheens</span></span></div><table border="0" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="project-metadata"><tbody>

<br />
<strong>High gloss:</strong> The most durable and easiest to clean of all paint sheens<span style="background-color: white;">, </span></span><a class="external" href="http://blog.raiderpainting.com/2008/07/what-makes-paint-glossy.html" target="_blank"><span style="background-color: white; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">high-gloss paint</span></a><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"> is hard, ultra-shiny, and light-reflecting. Think appliance-paint tough. High gloss is a good choice for area that sticky fingers touch—cabinets, trim, and doors. High-gloss, however, is too much shine for interior walls. And like a Spandex dress, high gloss shows every bump and roll, so don’t skimp on prep work.</span></div></div><ul><li><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Practical application: kitchens, door and window trim</span></li>
</ul><ul><li><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Durability: very high</span></li>
</ul><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><strong>Semi-gloss:</strong> Good for rooms where moisture, drips, and grease stains challenge walls. Also great for trim work that takes a lot of abuse.</span><br />
<ul><li><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Practical application: kitchens, bathrooms, trim, chair rails</span></li>
</ul><ul><li><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Durability: high</span></li>
</ul><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><strong>Satin:</strong> Has a yummy luster that, despite the name, often is described as velvety. It’s easy to clean, making it excellent for high-traffic areas. Its biggest flaw is it reveals application flaws, such as </span><a class="internal" href="http://www.blogger.com/articles/must-have-painting-tools/"><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">roller or brush</span></a><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"> strokes. Touch-ups later can be tricky. </span><br />
<ul><li><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Practical application: family rooms, foyers, hallways, kid’s bedrooms</span></li>
</ul><ul><li><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Durability: high</span></li>
</ul><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><strong>Eggshell:</strong> Between satin and flat on the sheen (and durability) scale is eggshell, so named because it’s essentially a flat (no-shine) finish with little luster, like a chicken’s egg. Eggshell covers wall imperfections well and is a great finish for gathering spaces that don’t get a lot of bumps and scuffs.</span><br />
<ul><li><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Practical application: dining rooms, living rooms, libraries</span></li>
</ul><ul><li><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Durability: medium</span></li>
</ul><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><strong>Flat or matte:</strong> A friend to walls that have something to hide, flat/matte soaks up, rather than reflects, light. It has the most pigment and will provide the most coverage, which translates to time and money savings. However, it’s </span><a class="internal" href="http://www.blogger.com/articles/remove-stains-walls-you-paint/"><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">tough to clean</span></a><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"> without taking paint off with the grime.</span><br />
<ul><li><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Practical application: adult’s bedrooms and other interior rooms that won’t be roughed up by kids </span></li>
</ul><ul><li><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Durability: medium-low</span></li>
</ul><h3><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">More fun sheen facts</span></h3><ul><li><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Dark, richer paint colors have more colorant, which boosts sheen. If you don’t want a super-shiny wall, step down at least one level on the sheen scale. Ditto if you’re painting a large, sun-washed or imperfect wall. </span></li>
</ul><ul><li><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Adding sheen also adds price: Valspar Ultra Premium eggshell costs $32, satin $33, and semi-gloss $34. </span></li>

<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">There's plenty to love about small homes--they're easier to maintain, and the price tag is generally lower. Image: Ross Chapin Architects/www.rosschapin.com</span></div></div><!-- end related info --><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">A </span><a class="external" href="http://www.nbnnews.com/NBN/issues/2010-10-18/Front%2BPage/index.html" target="_blank"><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">small home</span></a><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"> packs plenty of perks, and generally means a lower asking price. But entry price is only one factor—they’re easier on the pocketbook in a host of ways.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">1. Lower property taxes. Your small home will be charged at a lower tax rate than its larger neighbors because the assessed value generally is lower.<br />
<br />
2. Lower property insurance. The smaller the house, generally the lower the insurance cost, although it also matters </span><a class="external" href="http://www2.iii.org/index.cfm?instanceID=398875" target="_blank"><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">where you live</span></a><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"> and how your small house is constructed. A brick house in wildfire-prone southern California is likely to cost less to insure than a similar-size house with wood siding.<br />
<br />
3. You’ll save on heating and cooling. That’s regardless of how energy efficient the house is. In fact, one study indicates that a poorly insulated, 1,500 sq. ft. house is at least </span><a class="external" href="http://www.buildinggreen.com/live/index.cfm/2010/10/19/Green-Building-Priority-5--Build-Smaller#more" target="_blank"><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">$200 cheaper per year to heat and cool</span></a><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"> than a well-insulated house twice that size. The </span><a class="external" href="http://www.eia.doe.gov/emeu/consumption/index.html" target="_blank"><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">U.S. Energy Information Administration</span></a><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"> says homes of 2,000 sq. ft. to 2,500 sq. ft. use an average 102.3 million BTUs of fuel yearly—13% less than homes that are 1,000 square feet larger.<br />
<br />
4. Save on major replacements. When you need to replace a major house component or system, you’ll be glad you’re living in a smaller home. For example: According to the </span><a class="external" href="http://www.remodeling.hw.net/facts-and-figures/cost-vs.-value-report/" target="_blank"><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Cost vs. Value Report</span></a><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"> from Remodeling Magazine, the national average for vinyl replacement siding is about $9 per sq. ft.<br />
<br />
For a modest-size house (1,500 sq. ft. of living space) with 1,740 sq. ft. of exterior wall space, that’s $15,660. For a 2,500-sq.-ft. house, you’ll pay up to $10,000 more!<br />
<br />
5. Easier maintenance. You’ll spend less time cutting those smaller lawns, cleaning gutters, </span><a class="internal" href="http://www.blogger.com/articles/green-window-cleaning-makes-glass-pane-fully-clear/"><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">washing windows</span></a><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">, and the umpteen other chores that home ownership involves. Figure 16 windows and sliding glass doors on a home of 2,000 square feet or less would take about 10 hours to clean, inside and out, twice a year. Double the house size, and that’s roughly 20 hours spent with a squeegee and rag.<br />

<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><img alt="Gray kitchen_backsplash" class="alignleft size-full wp-image-1952" height="168" src="http://styledstagedsold.blogs.realtor.org/files/2011/02/Gray-kitchen_backsplash.jpg" style="border-bottom: white 5px solid; border-left: white 5px solid; border-right: white 5px solid; border-top: white 5px solid; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;" title="Gray kitchen_backsplash" width="257" /></span></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;"><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Add caption</span></td></tr>
</tbody></table><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">So that reddish pink Honeysuckle hue may be stealing all of the glory as far as being the “</span><a href="http://styledstagedsold.blogs.realtor.org/2011/01/10/the-color-of-the-year-for-2011/" target="_blank"><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">color of the year</span></a><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">,” but more home owners also are seeing gray.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Gray has become the hot new neutral, and a popular choice particularly in kitchens for backsplashes, countertops, flooring, and cabinetry, according to a recent article in Newsday by Kristin Taveira, “The Grays of Our Lives: Moody and Mod, It’s a Hot Color in the Kitchen.”</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">“The white kitchens never go out of style–you see them everywhere– but gray is the new white,” Jennifer Mabley of Mabley Handler Interior Design told Newsday. “Gray gives you dimension and depth, and helps to tie in the natural colors in the stone countertops. Sometimes, when you have a white kitchen and granite, there’s a disconnect. The gray helps tie in a natural color.”</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Designers in the article note gray can:</span><br />
<ul><li><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">be easily adaptable and paired with any shade for a pop of color, such as yellow, for more drama, or you can use it to help soften another hue. </span></li>
<li><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">enhance the look of stainless steel and granite. </span></li>
<li><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">create a sense of permanence. It can ground a long space, whereas white may make it appear that it goes on forever. </span></li>
</ul><strong><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Other color trends for paint in 2011:</span></strong><br />
<strong><span id="more-1950"><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"></span></span></strong><br />
<div class="wp-caption alignleft" id="attachment_1965" style="width: 165px;"><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><img alt="blue door" class="size-full wp-image-1965 " height="154" src="http://styledstagedsold.blogs.realtor.org/files/2011/02/blue-door1.jpg" style="border-bottom: white 5px solid; border-left: white 5px solid; border-right: white 5px solid; border-top: white 5px solid;" title="blue door" width="155" /> </span><div class="wp-caption-text"><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Photo Credit: Paint Quality Institute</span></div></div><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">So if gray doesn’t seem like the smart choice for your space, there are plenty of other colors catching on this year.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><strong>Play the blues.</strong> If you’re not feeling gray, maybe a little blue? Blues–from denim dark to blue-gray–are gaining steam as popular choices for walls and even ceilings.</span><br />
<div class="wp-caption alignright" id="attachment_1962" style="width: 217px;"><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><img alt="neutral.sss" class="size-full wp-image-1962" height="208" src="http://styledstagedsold.blogs.realtor.org/files/2011/02/neutral.sss.jpg" style="border-bottom: white 5px solid; border-left: white 5px solid; border-right: white 5px solid; border-top: white 5px solid;" title="neutral.sss" width="207" /> </span><div class="wp-caption-text"><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Photo Credit: Paint Quality Institute</span></div></div><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><strong>Join the neutral craze.</strong> So gray is hardly the only neutral choice. Warm whites, tawny tans, barely-there coral and greens are proving to be popular shades in bedrooms, baths, and kitchens, according to the Paint Quality Institute’s 2011 Color Trends report. More home owners are reaching for a variety of casual neutral and pastel hues to create warm, inviting living spaces.</span><br />
<strong><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"></span></strong><br />
<strong><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"></span></strong><br />
<div class="wp-caption alignleft" id="attachment_1963" style="width: 243px;"><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><img alt="Metallic painted gold ceiling" class="size-full wp-image-1963 " height="235" src="http://styledstagedsold.blogs.realtor.org/files/2011/02/metallic-ceiling.jpg" style="border-bottom: white 5px solid; border-left: white 5px solid; border-right: white 5px solid; border-top: white 5px solid;" title="metallic ceiling" width="233" /> </span><div class="wp-caption-text"><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Metallic painted gold ceiling; Photo Credit: Paint Quality Institute</span></div></div><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><strong>Give it some shimmer.</strong> Higher paint sheens and metallic finishes, such as gold–particularly in dining rooms, master bedrooms, and bathrooms–are also popular this year, according to the Paint Quality Institute. “More gloss means more reflectivity, which means more light,” according to its trend report. “Gloss can subtly create a brighter, more upbeat mood in a home, but at the same time, it adds style and pizzazz.”</span><br />
<strong><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">So what are your favorite finds recently in paint colors for spicing up a home’s interior?</span></strong>NormanHouseLovehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14698497346794606634noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2283369314806987370.post-24727444346123532602011-03-25T14:48:00.000-05:002011-03-25T14:48:24.436-05:00Where to Search For a Home<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Check out these sites for searching for a home.....they will have the most up to date information on homes that are currently for sale.
